Donate an Object
The Thackray Museum is not currently accepting new donations to the collections.
The Thackray Museum has over 45,000 objects in its collection. In order to ensure we are collecting responsibly, we are implementing a pause on collecting for 6 months while we review our collecting policy. We will continue to use the collections for fascinating research and fantastic displays.
Frequently asked questions
Where can I take my object if you can’t take it?
We have collected a list of contacts, including other local and medical museums, so that other institutions that are collecting have the opportunity to accept your item. Each museum will have different policies saying what they can collect so there are no guarantees your object will be accepted. If you call the museum with details, they will be able to let you know. This contact list is below or can be picked up from the museum reception desk.
Can you still identify my mystery object even if you can’t keep it?
Yes, we still have an enquiry service and can identify an object for you. If you want to research an object yourself you can make an appointment to use our Medical History Resource Centre. This is free of charge and can be accessed by researchers Monday-Friday, 10am-4pm subject to appointment. Email info@thackraymuseum.org or call 0113 244 4343 to arrange your appointment or to speak to a curator about an object.
But what if my item is really rare and important and I want it to stay at the Thackray?
We will be looking to start collecting again in May 2012. If you can keep the object until then we will certainly consider whether it fits into our collections policy at that time. If you really can’t look after it and don’t want to send it anywhere else, either because of an important local connection or because it is rare, please do telephone us on 0113 244 4343 to speak to a curator. We are happy to discuss things with you.
I want to sell my object, can you value it for me?
Museums are not permitted to value any object for a member of the public. If you want a valuation then please consult an independent antiques professional to discuss this.
What are you doing while you are not collecting objects?
The museum is very busy caring for over 45,000 objects which are already in the collection. This includes undertaking conservation work, research and preparing items for display. We are also currently developing a new temporary exhibition space, as well as planning and running exciting events for 2012. As well as all this, the curatorial team will be looking at what objects we should be collecting in the future to fill any gaps in the collection and to ensure we are collecting the most important items to preserve for future generations.
Please do not send objects through the post or leave them at the museum without an appointment to do so. The museum can not accept any item left anonymously.
