Museum News –Ivory and Gold!

The Charrière inventory, purchased by the Museum with the aid of the Friends’ Collections fund, has arrived. The 186-page manuscript lists the stock of the stock of the works of the Charrière company as of 23 March 1866. This is a unique insight into the actual and equipment of one of the greatest of the French 19th century instrument makers. It enables researchers to compare this stock with the catalogues published by the firm in 1862 and 1867, which we already have. Charrière was noted for the luxurious nature of the instruments he made, some with ivory handles and gold ferrules. The whole curatorial team believe that this is a most significant addition to our collection. Joseph Frederic Benoit Charrière was born in Switzerland in 1803, and went to Paris as an apprentice in 1816. He started his own business as a surgical instrument maker in 1820 and quickly became known as one of the most innovative and high quality makers in France. In1852 he handed over his business to his only son, Jean Jukes Charrière, but unfortunately in 1865 Charrière Fils died of cholera, shattering his father’s hopes. Unwilling to come out of retirement and start managing the business again, Charrière Senior decided to sell it to two of his apprentices Robert and Collin. The inventory was prepared for this sale by M Rousset.
