Medicine at the Movies
In 2010, the Thackray Museum completed a successful project working with deaf and hard of hearing people who produced inspirational films about deafness.
Participants produced their own films using the museum's historic hearing aids as props and the museum galleries as a film set. These sources of inspiration stimulated new responses. Through their films, participants expressed powerful feelings and memories about their deafness.
The Thackray Museum holds more than 900 objects relating to deafness and hearing loss. We are keen to continue working with deaf and hard of hearing people to make this collection accessible to a wider audience.
The films can be viewed on YouTube using the links below:

The films were part of a wider project with the UK Medical Collections Group, in which each museum worked with a new audience group.
At the end of the project, a film-making guide was produced detailing the techniques developed through the project. This is available in pdf format.
