The Collections
Paul Thackray, Director of Leeds-based medical suppliers Chas F. Thackray Ltd, founded the Museum’s collection in 1990.
The company traces its origins to 1902 when Paul’s grandfather, Charles Thackray, opened a chemist's shop opposite Leeds General Infirmary. The business rapidly developed into a medical supply firm, and soon provided drugs, instruments and equipment to a worldwide market.
In 1990 the company was sold and Paul set up a charitable trust to care for its archive and collection.
Since its inception, the collection has grown and we now care for over 40,000 objects, some dating as far back as Roman times. The Museum continues to develop its collections and undertake research into medical history.
